The act of reducing greenhouse gases that fuel climate change is referred to as mitigation. Each of us can make small changes like:
- Conserving energy by turning off lights when you leave a room and electronics when you aren't using them.
- Leaving the car at home as much as possible. Walk, bike, carpool or take a bus.
- Reducing, reusing or recycling as much as you can.
These small changes can make a big difference, especially when governments, institutions and local businesses take action too.
As a first step to reducing corporate emissions, CBT is conducting an emissions inventory. An action plan will follow and will outline steps CBT can take to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions across its operations.
Columbia Basin Trust has partnered with regional districts in the Kootenays to develop a
Kootenay Carbon Neutral Action Strategy. This strategy outlines a multi-year approach that will help regional districts, participating municipalities and First Nations reduce their emissions and become
carbon neutral by 2012.
Year One of a multi-year effort to make regional districts, participating municipalities and First Nations
carbon neutral by 2012 is underway. Year One work includes development of action plans for each regional district, and an action plan template for each municipality and First Nation that will help guide their efforts to reduce emissions.
An approach to mitigation - reducing greenhouse gas emissions - at this level and scale is unique, as it covers 29 Kootenay municipalities, five First Nation communities and three regional districts. This collaborative approach will provide substantial benefits to a range of communities including small, rural communities and electoral areas with limited resources.
