Climate Change in the Columbia Basin

CBT is committed to working with residents of the Columbia Basin to help them understand issues that matter to them; one of these issues is climate change.

In terms of temperature and precipitation in the Columbia Basin, what we've seen in the past isn't what we can expect in the future. Instead we can expect warmer winters, drier summers, lower summer stream flows, loss of glaciers, rising snowlines and more extreme weather events. A summary report titled, Climate Change in the Columbia: Starting the Dialogue, is a starting point for discussions about climate change in the Columbia Basin.

These changes will impact people living in the Columbia Basin. CBT is taking the lead and is working with a range of partners to increase awareness, help reduce emissions and support communities to adapt to the expected changes. Planning for climate change in a rural context like this is unique to the Columbia Basin.

Impacts in the Columbia Basin

CBT collaborates with leading scientists and climate change experts from across North America to prepare credible, science-based reports that focus on the Canadian Columbia Basin, and to share those results with residents.

Connecting with Communities

CBT also collaborates with local partners to host workshops on climate change in communities across the region, connecting residents with research by some of North America's most renowned experts on topics such as changing hydrology, receding glaciers and managing water resources.
